Marks

Marks are badges or labels that you can assign to products to highlight special characteristics, certifications, or promotional statuses. Marks help customers quickly identify important product attributes and can improve product visibility and appeal in your store.

Overview

Marks are useful for:

  • Highlighting certifications: Organic, Fair Trade, Certified, etc.
  • Promotional labels: New, Hot, On Sale, Limited Edition
  • Product quality indicators: Award-winning, Best Seller, Top Rated
  • Inventory status: In Stock, Coming Soon, Discontinued
  • Product features: Eco-Friendly, Handmade, Locally-Made

Marks are multilingual, allowing you to define the same mark in different languages for international stores.

Accessing Marks

Navigate to Catalog Management > Marks from the admin sidebar. This section displays all marks with their names and associated images.

Marks List

Each mark contains:

  • Name: The display text for the mark (translatable to multiple languages)
  • Image: An optional image file to represent the mark visually

  • Communicate important information at a glance
  • Help customers filter or identify specific product types
  • Increase product appeal through certifications or special status
  • Support marketing efforts and promotions

Adding Mark Images

While image upload is optional, adding images makes marks more visually distinctive:

Image Best Practices:

  • Size: Use square images (100x100px to 300x300px work well)
  • Format: Use PNG or SVG for transparency, JPG for photos
  • Clarity: Ensure the image is clear and recognizable at small sizes
  • Branding: Use consistent colors and styles with your store design
  • Transparency: PNG with transparent background allows flexibility in layout

Common Mark Images:

  • Certification marks: Government logos, organic certification, fair trade seal
  • Quality indicators: Star ratings, achievement badges, awards
  • Promotional labels: "Sale" tag, "New" ribbon, "Hot" flame
  • Features: Leaf (eco-friendly), Hand (handmade), Location pin (local)

Editing a Mark

To modify a mark:

  1. Click the Edit link in the Actions column
  2. Update the Name as needed
  3. Upload a new image or remove the existing image
  4. Click Save to apply changes

Note: Changing a mark's name or image updates it everywhere it's used on products.

  1. Click the Delete button in the Actions column
  2. Confirm when prompted

Important: Deleting a mark removes it from all products that use it. This action is permanent. Consider whether the mark is still being used before deleting.

Multilingual Marks

Supporting Multiple Languages

Marks support multiple languages through Spatie's translatable package. You can define the same mark in multiple languages:

  1. When creating or editing a mark, the system may offer language options
  2. Enter the mark name in each supported language
  3. The system automatically displays the correct language based on user's locale
  4. Images are shared across all language versions

Language Configuration

Your store supports languages configured in the admin system settings. Common configurations include:

  • English + Arabic (for Middle Eastern markets)
  • Multiple European languages (English, German, French, Spanish)
  • Asian languages (English, Chinese, Japanese)

Searching and Filtering

  • Name: Search by mark name (e.g., "organic", "certified")
  • Partial matches work (e.g., search "cert" finds "Certified", "Certification")

  • Name: Alphabetical order of mark names
  • Image: Sort by image presence

Pagination

Use pagination controls to:

  • Change marks per page (5, 10, 25, 50, or All)
  • Navigate between pages

Mark Naming Conventions

Create Clear, Concise Names

  • Be specific: "Fair Trade Certified" is clearer than "Fair"
  • Use common terms: Names that customers immediately understand
  • Avoid acronyms: Unless widely recognized (e.g., "USDA Organic")
  • Keep brief: 1-3 words work best for badges
  • Consistent style: Use consistent capitalization and format

Examples

Certifications: - Organic - Fair Trade - USDA Certified - ISO Certified - Vegan - Gluten Free

Product Status: - New Arrival - Hot Seller - Limited Edition - Bestseller - Coming Soon - Clearance

Quality/Feature: - Award Winner - Eco-Friendly - Handmade - Locally Made - Made in USA - Premium Quality

Promotions: - On Sale - Flash Sale - Exclusive - Members Only - Early Access - Last Chance

Best Practices

Mark Organization

  • Keep quantity reasonable: 5-15 marks is typically manageable; more becomes overwhelming
  • Avoid redundancy: Don't create similar marks like "On Sale" and "Sale"
  • Group by category: Consider the mark types (certifications, promotions, features)
  • Regular review: Remove unused marks periodically

Image Optimization

  • Consistent style: Use a consistent design language across all mark images
  • Color strategy: Use colors that work well with your product images and backgrounds
  • Test visibility: Ensure marks are recognizable at small sizes (50x50px)
  • Accessibility: Include text labels in addition to images for screen readers
  • Brand alignment: Ensure mark designs match your store's visual identity

Application Strategy

  • Meaningful use: Only apply marks when they genuinely describe the product
  • Limit per product: Use 1-3 marks per product for clarity (avoid mark overload)
  • Update regularly: Keep marks current with actual product status
  • Track effectiveness: Monitor which marks drive customer engagement
  • Seasonal rotation: Adjust marks for seasonal products and promotions

  2. Edit a product
  3. Look for the Marks field (usually in product details)
  4. Select which marks apply to this product
  5. Save the product

The selected marks will then display on the product in your store.

Troubleshooting

Q: My mark image isn't displaying on products

A: Check that: 1. The image was successfully uploaded (visible in Marks list) 2. The mark is properly assigned to the product 3. Your theme supports mark images 4. Image file isn't corrupted

Q: I want to rename a mark - will it affect my products?

A: Yes, but positively! Renaming a mark updates the name everywhere it's displayed on products. The change is instantaneous and affects all products using that mark.

Q: How many marks can I create?

A: There's no hard limit, but fewer is better. 10-20 marks keeps your store clean and helps customers focus on important information. Too many marks become noise.

Q: Can I delete a mark that's used on products?

A: Yes, the system will let you delete it, and it will be removed from those products. However, consider whether you want to keep the mark for historical records. You might rename it to "(Archived)" instead.

Q: Can marks have different names in different languages?

A: Yes! That's the benefit of translatable marks. Enter the same mark name in each language and the system shows the appropriate language to customers.

Q: Can I use the same image for multiple marks?

A: Yes, you can upload the same image to multiple marks, but it's generally better to have unique images for clarity.
