Unit creation form with name field

Name (Required)

  • The unit name as shown to customers
  • Must be filled before saving
  • Should be clear and universally understood
  • Can be full name or abbreviation
  • Examples: "Piece", "Kilogram", "Kg", "Liter", "L", "Box", "Dozen"

Naming Best Practices:

Option 1: Full Names - Clear and unambiguous - Better for customers unfamiliar with abbreviations - Examples: "Piece", "Kilogram", "Liter", "Box", "Dozen"

Option 2: Abbreviations - Shorter, saves space in product listings - Familiar to most customers - Examples: "Pc", "Kg", "L", "Lb", "Oz"

Option 3: Bilingual - Use English in one locale, Arabic in another - Automatic translation based on customer's language preference

Recommended Approach: - Use commonly recognized terms - Be consistent across all units - Consider your target audience's familiarity

Unit Selection Best Practices

For Products

When assigning units to products, choose based on:

How Customers Buy: - If bought individually: "Piece" - If bought by weight: "Kg", "g", "lb" - If bought by volume: "L", "ml", "gal" - If bought in groups: "Pack", "Set", "Dozen"

Product Nature: - Solid items: "Piece", "Box", "Set" - Liquids: "Liter", "ml", "Gallon" - Bulk items: "Kg", "Ton" - Fabric/Cables: "Meter", "Yard"

Industry Standard: - Follow what competitors use - Match customer expectations - Use familiar measurements

Common Scenarios

Scenario 1: Setting Up a New Store

  1. Create fundamental units first: Piece, Kg, Liter
  2. Add packaging units: Box, Pack, Set
  3. Include specialized units for your product types
  4. Test by adding a few products to ensure units make sense

Scenario 2: Adding a New Product Type

Example: Adding fabric products to electronics store 1. Check if needed units exist (Meter, Yard) 2. Create new units if missing 3. Add both Arabic and English names 4. Assign to new products

Scenario 3: International Expansion

When expanding to markets with different measurement preferences: 1. Add equivalent imperial/metric units 2. Example: Add "Pound (lb)" alongside "Kilogram (Kg)" 3. Update product units based on target market 4. Keep both available for flexibility

Unit Quality Checklist

Before publishing a unit:

  • [ ] Unit name is clear and understandable
  • [ ] Name provided in both Arabic and English
  • [ ] Name follows consistent format with other units
  • [ ] Unit makes sense for intended product types
  • [ ] No duplicate units exist
  • [ ] Abbreviation (if used) is standard and recognizable

Relationship with Products

Units connect to products in the following way: - Each product can be assigned one unit - Unit appears next to product price and quantity - Helps customers understand product sizing - Used in cart and checkout displays - Appears on invoices and receipts

Product-Unit Examples: - "Samsung Galaxy S24 - 1 Piece" - "Olive Oil - 2 Liters" - "Sugar - 5 Kg" - "Screwdriver Set - 1 Set" - "White T-Shirt - 3 Pieces"

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue: Unit not appearing in product dropdown - Solution: Ensure unit is created and saved, refresh product page

Issue: Wrong language showing for unit - Solution: Switch locale and update the name field for that language

Issue: Duplicate units with different spellings - Solution: Delete duplicates, standardize naming, update affected products

Issue: Confusion between similar units - Solution: Use clear, distinct names; add context if needed (e.g., "Pack (6 units)")

Issue: Products showing unit in wrong language - Solution: Check product's assigned unit has name in both languages

By maintaining a well-organized unit system with clear, standardized names, you help customers understand exactly what they're purchasing!
